Selling a Junk Car on the Island
The Town of Palm Beach keeps to its own island, across the Intracoastal from West Palm Beach, and our trucks reach it the way everyone does: over the Royal Park or Flagler Memorial bridge. Most of the vehicles we buy here never died on the road. They were parked, and then they stayed parked. One phone call gets a firm quote, a scheduled window gets the car gone, and the tow costs nothing anywhere on the island.
Why Do So Many Palm Beach Cars Sit Unused?
Island households run on a different rhythm. A second or third car kept for guests, for staff errands, or for the one season a year the house is full can go months between starts, and a few years of that will finish a vehicle as surely as any commute. The battery sulfates, the tires flat-spot and dry-rot, fuel turns to varnish in the lines, and eventually the car that ran fine last spring refuses a jump. At that point nobody is really weighing repair against sale. The question is how to get a dead vehicle out of a garage bay that someone needs back, and that is a tow-truck job. It is the job we do every week on both sides of the bridges.
What About Inherited Vehicles and Estate Clear-Outs?
A good share of our island calls come from executors, adult children, and property managers emptying a house. The car is often the last thing left: a sedan the owner stopped driving years ago, still holding its garage bay. Whose name appears on the title decides what the sale needs, so have the paperwork in hand when you call and we will talk through it plainly, including the situations we cannot buy in. If the title is simply lost, Florida issues a duplicate for $75.25, and $10.00 more buys a Fast Title printed in person. If no title can be produced at all, Florida law allows exactly one route: a derelict motor vehicle certificate under FS 319.30, completed with a licensed salvage motor vehicle dealer at the time of sale. Anyone promising to buy with no title and no questions is describing something else.
How Does Pickup Work Across the Bridges?
We schedule island pickups to a window, not a vague day. The driver confirms before he crosses the Royal Park or Flagler Memorial bridge, arrives when he said he would, and the loading itself takes minutes, not hours. Gated drives, tight garage entries, and courtyards off A1A are normal territory, and every truck carries the winch and skates a car needs when it has not rolled in years. If you would rather the vehicle leave while the household is out, or before a listing photographer arrives, say so; a set window and a key arrangement handle it quietly. No forms, no email chains. The whole transaction is one phone call and one visit.
What Paperwork Does Florida Ask of the Seller?
Two things, and both are quick. First, sign the title over at the sale. Florida’s title transfer fee is $75.25, and a transfer filed late carries a $20.00 late fee, which is a good reason not to leave the paperwork in a drawer. Second, file form HSMV 82050, the notice of sale, with a motor vehicle service center. Florida has required it since July 2009; it removes your registration from the vehicle and protects you from civil liability for whatever happens to the car afterward. One more island-specific reminder: the license plate belongs to you, not the car, so pull it off before the truck arrives and surrender or transfer it at the tax collector.
What Is a Long-Parked Island Car Worth?
Usually more than the owner expects, for one reason: garage-kept cars are complete. Nothing has been scavenged, the converter is still on, the trim is intact, and completeness is most of what a scale price rewards. Most complete vehicles bring $150 to $650, and the number quoted on the phone is the number paid at pickup; a firm quote and a free tow are the two promises we make before anyone crosses a bridge.
